An expanded exploration into my childhood instincts with cross-stitch after my mom taught me when I was 8. This series, “ColorCodeX”, is a pilgrimage of language and pattern. Cloth has been the ground for human expression since its inception, and the structure of cloth gave birth to the digital language of binary code. These samplers are linguistic patterns manually designed using digital tools, following the constraints of the grid, and then transcribed back onto the cloth structure that informed their origin. Using the format of a banded border sampler, six tablets of colorful cross-stitch patterns explore how the structure, density, and shape of each phrase impacts the perception of the fibers used to write each line. Containing flaws and glitches that artifice strives to erase, these works are a joyful indulgence of color, texture, and materiality. Spectral hues and values constructed from a binary language, illuminating magic unique to being human. A commitment to myself and the value of human endeavor in the face of exploding artificial intelligence, and a practice of finding my own voice within the craft.
